Birth & Diversity Doula Training
by NDoula Community Alliance
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
NDoula Community Alliance’s Birth & Diversity Doula Training is a comprehensive program designed to increase the number of doulas in Cook County, with a specific emphasis on recruiting and training Black/African American doulas, Spanish-speaking doulas, and a diverse group of doulas who represent historically marginalized communities. Recognizing the deep disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes, this program prioritizes culturally responsive care and aims to strengthen community-led support systems. Participants will engage in a structured curriculum that blends historical and contemporary birthwork knowledge, fostering a forward-facing movement that acknowledges traditional wisdom while addressing present-day challenges in maternal health with evidenced-based information.
Throughout this training, participants will receive in-depth education on key topics, including anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth, emotional and mental support techniques, childbirth education strategies, and the environmental and systemic factors that impact birthing experiences. The program will also focus on practical skills for supporting families during labor, delivery, and postpartum transitions, ensuring doulas are well-prepared to provide compassionate, evidence-based care. In addition to clinical knowledge, trainees will learn advocacy strategies to help birthing people navigate healthcare settings and ensure their rights and preferences are honored.
By integrating birthwork into everyday community life, this program aims to equip individuals with the confidence and skills to support themselves, their loved ones, and their communities throughout the birthing journey. Participants will leave with a deep understanding of the birthing process, the ability to provide culturally congruent care, actionable skills, opportunities for direct service experience, and the tools to challenge systemic barriers that often hinder positive birthing experiences. Ultimately, this program seeks to create a self-sustaining network of doulas who uplift their communities, increase options and autonomy, and reclaim birth as a sacred, community-centered experience.
